MOBI and AZW3 reader for Chrome
MOBI and AZW3 are Kindle ebook formats. Chrome cannot open them; it only downloads the file. Readkave is a free extension that opens DRM-free MOBI and AZW3 books in a browser tab, with the same pages, search, highlights and dark mode as EPUB.
Add to ChromeHelpWorks in Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Edge and Brave. Desktop only: Chrome for Android and iOS has no extensions.
Open a MOBI or AZW3 file in Chrome
- Install Readkave from the Chrome Web Store (free, no account).
- Click the Readkave icon in the toolbar to open your library.
- Drop the .mobi or .azw3 file onto the page, or click Add books.
Or right-click a Kindle download link on a site such as Project Gutenberg and choose "Open in Readkave".
Which Kindle books will open?
- DRM-free MOBI and AZW3 files: the Kindle downloads from Project Gutenberg, the AZW3 files from Standard Ebooks, and books you converted yourself, for example with Calibre.
- Not supported: books protected by Amazon's DRM, and the newer KFX format. Books bought in the Kindle store are normally protected; read those in Amazon's own apps. Readkave does not remove DRM.
MOBI or AZW3?
MOBI is the older Kindle format. AZW3, also called KF8, is the newer one with better formatting. Readkave opens both.
Questions
Can I read Kindle books I bought from Amazon in Chrome?
Not with Readkave: books from the Kindle store are protected by DRM. Amazon's own apps and its Kindle Cloud Reader open them.
Does Readkave convert MOBI to EPUB?
No. It reads files as they are; there is nothing to convert.
Is it free and private?
Yes. No account, no ads, and your books stay in your browser.
